Korean Indie

Things I like about Sweet Sorrow:

They are old enough to legally drink.

They sing $@#*$*@#& damn well.

I was deciding between posting on them or 2PM’s new mini album, but considering I’ve been playing Sweet Sorrow’s Songs on repeat for the past week, the decision pretty much made itself. Yes, I realize their album came out mid March, but I was a little preoccupied with other Korean stuff at that time, so you’ll have to excuse the lateness on this one.

Vol. 2.5 Songs In the past, I’ve said that I dislike Korean ballads, really dislike a cappella, and find Kpop outside of idol stuff completely boring. Well, this one album/group has made me completely eat my words. I don’t even know what to say; their stuff is completely amazing. Actually, there’s not a whole lot of a cappella, but the bits they have are amazing and I wish there’s more. The ballads are well done, but my faves are the more jazzy sounding songs. I don’t know enough about Korean music to classify their music, but to me it sounds very acoustic and folksy, which is so totally change of pace from stereotypical Kpop. Gah, I really don’t know what to say. It’s just really, really good. So please pretty please try it out y/y?

Soompi Thread Like most Soompi artist threads, this is very nicely done. But why so little postage action??? I never post on Soompi, but I’m seriously considering bumping their thread. Why so little love??

Says to You @ Lee Hana’s Peppermint For artists like them, I always like live performances more then music videos. This is the song they’re promoting off the album. Really, really good; their voices sound smooth and mellow ♥ Actually, check out pla4rang’s channel for more HQ performances ; )

I Love You @ Music Travel LaLaLa I’ve never heard of this show before, but I think this is MBC’s version of Chocolate/Peppermint. Anyways, this is more upbeat song than StY. This was a really fun performance, and I love how at ease they look.

A bunch of MVs, but not exhaustive. Pretty cliche Korean stuff. Naturally, the do a lot of OST work. I don’t really have an interest in music videos when hotboysdancing! isn’t happening, but if you like K dramas, you’ll probably like them. Not 100% sure on all the English titles o__O

To Become Distant

Love Me Not

No Matter How I Think About It

You <————- This song is one of my faves!

You like SuJu right? These two groups seem pretty tight. Believe it or not, I actually didn’t discover Sweet Sorrow through SJ, so these vids are a nice surprise. If I’m not mistaken, Sweet Sorrow are regular guests on Sukira, as evidenced below.

Mario a cappella Yes, that Mario. Cracktastically good.

“Sorry, Sorry” a cappella So ridiculously cool! How they did that in one breath I will never know.

“Saranghae” I think that’s the title of the song T__T Focus on the people in the back and not the dorks making the heart signs XD. I know it’s hard, but try your best, I believe in you!

A capella in the Bathroom Exactly as the title implies; dang the bathroom has great acoustics. It’s not a Kpop group until the dorkiness comes out. They sing a very familiar song half way through~~

“Scapegoat” Collab with Epik High from Remap. If the SuJu connection can’t convince you to check them out :D

Okay, that’s the best my non-Korean Korean loving self could do. There’s something called “Sweet Sorrow TV” which I think is some sort of pseudo documentary on them or something. It’s not subbed so I didn’t link it here, but if you’re interesting to see some stuff besides singing, it’s on youtube ; ) Really though, all the clips are great, but just listening to the album is what really made me a fan. If you’re looking for something new/different from Kpop, I highly, highly recommend this^^

OMG, I can’t get enough! Yes, I’ve been listening to their most recent album, The Journey of Cultivating a Potato Field (awesomest title ever^^), and it is all so good. I just love how laid back and mellow it is. Must track down their eariler works;;; I don’t have anything else to say. I just wanted to share the link. Ah, okay back to listening! ♥♥♥

Okay, for once, reading seoulbeats led to something more then just brain mushing. Actually, this song is really neat. So Kim C of 1N2D fame heads the alternative/rock band Hot Potato and wow, sooooooo good^^. I watch the show maybe once a month, and from what little I’ve seen, I never would have pegged him to sing with such a mellow vibe. Seriously, I’ve been playing the song nonstop for the last half hour. So so so good. Korean indie (loose definiton here) is like so intimidating, but I really wanna love it. I felt like once I listened to some Chinese indie, I was able to appreciate all Chinese music more, and I assume the same thing would happen with my love for Korean music too. Except, I have zero skillzs in Korean, so that’s like a total hurdle. Chinese indie is hard enough, and I haven’t even scratched the surface with that yet. As much as I’d love to get to know the Korean indie scene, realistically, it’s not happening *sadface*. Still, I appreciate being able to find any little nugget, and this is truly great stuff.

*BTW, still on my little Kpop hiatus, but my resolve is crumbling fast~ (Kangin on WGM//oh my…). Still, I’m proud that I haven’t really posted on DBSJ in like three weeks. Cookie for me.
